The Top 10 Kindergarten Books for Thanksgiving to Read Aloud

As we approach the Thanksgiving Holiday, I’m always looking for new and fun books to read to my students and my children. I’m going to share the top 10 favorites that are well loved in my classroom and in my home! These books are sure to bring smiles to the faces of your kindergarteners!

And at the end of this post, I’ll share a few supplemental resources and freebies that you can use with your own students!

Thanksgiving Books to Read Aloud

Read Aloud Book #1: Ten Fat Turkeys by Tony Johnston and Rich Deas

This is the cutest rhyming book where one by one the turkeys go away as they break a fence. It is great for introducing counting backwards from 10 or even for early subtraction!

Thanksgiving Book #2: The Very Stuffed Turkey by Katharine Kenah and Binny Talib

In this November read aloud, a little turkey is invited to too many Thanksgiving parties. He has quite the problem when he tries to enjoy the feast at each celebration!

Kindergarten Read Aloud #3: I Know an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Pie by Alison Jackson and Judy Schachner

This Thanksgiving read aloud is a great one for sequencing. An old lady swallows a pie followed by lots of other tasty foods! You can check out my retelling pack for this story HERE!

Best Thanksgiving Book #4: How to Catch a Turkey by Adam Wallace and Andy Elkerton

This is a funny series and this particular book is no exception. Turkey is running away so he doesn’t have to be in the play. Children are chasing him all over the school! This is at the top of our books for Thanksgiving to read aloud list!!

Fun Read Aloud Book #5: Run Turkey Run by Diane Mayr and Laura Rader

This is one of my favorite read aloud books for Thanksgiving! Poor turkey is trying to get away on Thanksgiving day but the farmer keeps finding him!

Read Aloud Book #6: Turkey Trouble by Wendi Silvano and Lee Harper 

Turkey Trouble is another great book for story sequence. The turkey in this book is trying not to become dinner. He tries many clever disguises in this book to get away!

Thanksgiving Book #7: Bear Says Thanks by Karma Wilson and Jane Chapman  

Have you ever read Bear Snores On? In this rhyming book, the lovable Bear learns an important lesson about friendship!

Kindergarten Read Aloud for Thanksgiving #8: Splat Says Thank You! by Rob Scotton

Splat the Cat is another series book. Splat always seems to find trouble and does in this book too! He always finds a way to make it work and learns a lesson about being thankful!

Best Thanksgiving Book #9: There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed A Turkey by Lucille Colandro and Jared D. Lee

Fun Read Aloud Book #10: The Great Turkey Race by Steve Metzger and Jim Paillot 

This book has s funny spin on Turkeys running away. Kids will love the silly characters who are trying to compete to be the Thanksgiving Turkey.
